The Castle of the Knights Templar in Ponferrada

Ponferrada is a town deeply rooted in medieval history.  The original gate to the city was built in 1249 AD and is still standing today.  Take a look.

One of Ponferrada’s prominent features is the Castle of the Knights Templar.  The castle was constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries and is a heavily fortified structure that continues to withstand the test of time.  The castle is currently owned by the King of Spain.

A foreboding presence in medieval times.  Our hostel is a 5-minute walk from this castle.
There are several turrets in the castle
Keyholes and arrow slits still visible in the castle walls
A Camino trail marker leading Pilgrims past the castle

And, a marker dividing the trail between cyclists and hikers

Buen Camino!
