Cambridge

On Wednesday, Siobhan and I took the train up to Cambridge to explore this medieval city and the university that bears  its name.  It rained softly most of the day, but the energy is this college town was vibrant.  Cambridge University was founded in 1209 and has about 23,000 students. It is a public research institution. There are 31 colleges within the university’s system. Admission requirements are quite high. The vast majority of students have only had straight A grades.  Some notable alumni include Sir Isaac Newton, CS Lewis, Stephen Hawking, Eddie Redmayne, Lord Byron, King Charles, Emma Thompson, Charles Darwin, Alan Turing, David Attenborough and John Cleese. Among many others.  This is Cambridge…

Trinity College.  This apple tree grew from a graft of the tree from which an apple supposedly fell and caused Isaac Newton to begin to ponder gravity.  The rooms above the tree to the left were Newton’s quarters.  He was named a full professor at Cambridge at the age of 26.
The classic, relaxing boat rides along the Cambridge River.  Punters are the people guiding these boats. Punting is quite popular in Cambridge.

Cambridge is a beautiful, inspiring university and city.  It is part of the fabric of England.  What a day!
