Ireland is well known for its stone walls, some of which are considered ancient. Stone walls are seen throughout this island. Most are “dry stone walls,” meaning they are built with no mortar or bonding agents at all. They are built by hand by stone masons and last for centuries. They are functional works of Irish craftsmanship. Here are just a few of them within three minutes walking of Martin and Siobhan’s home here on the peninsula.

A Stone Mason
Siobhan’s Uncle Sean was a master Stone Mason. He built houses for siblings and for his own family. He built rock walls in traditional ways. He was a craftsman in every sense of the word. He has passed away but has left behind a legacy for his family and his community. He built a miniature stone house, which now belongs to Siobhan and Martin and is outside the front of their home here on the banks of Donegal Bay. Notice that it coincidentally has a red door. Homes in this area must have red doors in keeping with the history and heritage of this peninsula. This little stone house is at home here. It is a tribute to Sean. The detail is incredible. It took 4 men to move it here to its new home.
