Ponferrada and St. Nicolas de Flue albergue

Karen and I applied to serve at St. Nicolas de Flue alburgue for two weeks in October.  We were so excited to get this appointment!

Here’s a bit of information about St. Nicolas de Flue albergue.

This large albergue is a part of the Spanish Federation of the Friends of the Camino de Santiago. It can house up to 150 Pilgrims (Camino hikers, also called Peregrinas) each evening.  This hostel has been serving the needs of Pilgrims since 1999. Ponferrada is a beautiful city located approximately 120 miles on the Camino de Santiago trail from Santiago, the end of the trek.

This albergue has a chapel, several rooms of bunks, a kitchen and eating space, laundry facilities, bike storage, outdoor green space and gathering space, a courtyard, and a large community room for gathering and sharing Camino experiences in the evenings.  Also, the city of Ponferrada has many historical places, public plazas, restaurants, etc.  And, the castle of the Knights of the Templar is here as well, less than a 10-minute was from St. Nicolas.  It’s a beautiful city.  Take a look around Ponferrada.  More on St. Nicolas later!

  1. What a lovely city Ponferrada is! The albergue has so many things to offer Pilgrims…welcome to those on the way! After all the days it may take to get that far on the Camino, I can imagine the welcome relief of those lucky enough to stay there. The stories you will have to share…! Be safe and have fun!!! ❤️ include some pics of yourself!!!

    1. Bren…..question. Do the folks who stay at the albergue need to pay for each night they stay? Are they limited to 1 night or some number of nights? Are the amenities like laundry and food charged for? Or do most folks go to the city for dinner or breakfast? Just curious!!!….Karla

What do the symbols on the waymarker mean?

    1. Hi pal! Are you on your way to Italy as we speak?
The marker is schematic of a scallop shell (a symbol of St.James) and the rays pointing the Way.
